How can I get smells out of plastic dishes?
This is especially a problem when my housemates leave food in dishes instead of washing them immediately -- coffee mugs, plastic drinking glasses, tupperware, etc.
I have found that normal dish soap can leave behind a "soapy" taste/smell in plastic dishes, so I have switched to an unscented dish soap. But no dish soap I've used has effectively rescued plastic coffee mugs and other dishes like this.
Other than NOT using plastic dishes, how can I extend the life of the dishes and keep them from getting smelly... without leaving behind a chemical smell/taste that's even worse?
Thanks for any advice.

I know that this is about to sound really wierd, but, I had this same problem and a friend of mine told me to do this after she read it in a helpful hints for housework article in the newspaper.
Use the laundry detergent OxyClean for plastic dishes. Not only does it not leave a soapy taste/smell, but, its not as harmful as the older methods of vinegar/water or bleach/water mixture.
For really hard to work out stains I would suggest using a mixture of baking soda and peroxide. (Make a thick paste like tooth paste) and spread on the dishes, leave there for an hour, then wash in the OxyClean, rinse, dry and there you go, perfect dishes, without all the scrubbing that ruins those plastic dishes, utensils and cups.

Try mixing real lemon juice with water and let it soak overnight. Or try vinegar and water.

Plastic dishes hold more bacteria than glass. The only thing I could suggest other than switching to glass is either using disposable or leaving the dishes in direct sunlight to kill the bacteria.
One option might be to soak them in some hot water with dilluted bleach. You'll need to rinse them very thoroughly but this might work.
The other idea is a little anal, but you could keep your own store of plates and dishes and not have your housemates using them. I used to have to same problem and if you keep your own dishes and wash them and keep them away from your housemates, they'll soon run out of dishes and get better at washing them!
Hope this helps.
mix a 2 tablespoons of bleach with 3 cups of HOT water. Fill container to top with the solution. Let it sit all night & then run either through your dishwasher or a hot sudsy bath of dish detergent.
If this doesn't work try dampening the container, then rub baking soda through out. Be very generous and really rub it on the surface tofill those microscopic cracks. Add about 1 cup of white vinegar. It will foam up. Swirl the liquid to activate on every seurface and allow to sit for 2-3 hours. Then wash like above
hope this helps!
