hot water is the best if you dont want to scratch your steel, other than that you can hack at it with nife or spatula
try the Mr.Clean eraser. First soakthe spot with water, then use the eraser.
After using your cooktop, it'll be hot and so will the caramelized sugar. Use some windex or other normal cleaner and it should be liquified to wipe it up. The quickest way I've found to clean your cooktop is right after when the surface is hot.
The first thing to think of when trying to remove something is what the base is. Since sugar is what caused this, use sugar again. I would suggest take some water and brown sugar in a pan and get it close to the same temp where carmelizing begins..i.e. 375...When it is hot, use a baisting brush or spoon to pour it on your area.
It will disolve the sugar and add a bit more...then just wipe it away.
hot water and a rag!! good luck! :)
Try wetting it and putting gobs of baking soda on it over night. It is great at cleaning stuff you'd never think would come up.
put a wet rag on it to soak for a few hours, is your range solid stainless or coated stainless either way protect the finish...
hot water on a dish cloth.. let soak if need be.. it will disolve
You could also try a steam-cleaner. Scunci makes one of these that goes for about $50 at Target or Wal-mart. There are also other brands available for about $25 which probably work just as well. This item worked really well for carmelized sugar that melted and stuck to my stove-top, but mine is not stainless steel.
