This is always a problem with carpeting and you can only do so much. A wet-vac helps alot. If the paint is fresh latex you may have some luck soaking it in Dirtex...

This cleaning product available at paint stores dissolves latex paint but wont dissolve your carpet like some paint strippers.
It does not work by iself. Wear rubber gloves or you will be hurtin'...work it into the painty spots and soak it up pretty good. Fuss the paint out bit by bit with a metal comb like this (also from the paint store...

You will have sucess if you do a little at a time and keep going back. Don't let it dry out. When you are done, rinse out the area with soapy water, vac it, rinse it , vac it again and let it dry out. You can dry it with a towel and a fan if you have no wet-vac.
Cut little bits of paint along the wall out with scissors. Be sure not to get the dirtex on any painted surface.
If it is oil paint or a large spot you may as well put a rug over it. (Some very crafty people can actually patch carpet, but I do not recommend trying...)
