How do you remove gum from the bottom of a shoe?

My three year old stepped within gum the other day and I didn't sense it until now. I am have a hard time getting it rotten. Is there something I can use that will verbs it up and make it come sour easier? It's all over the bottom of his shoe--not surrounded by one spot but over about one third of it.
