first remove as much matter as possible, then use a stiff brush with dish soap or laundry soap (test your carpet someplace inconspicuous first to test for dye fastness)to remove the rest. Try not to grind it into the carpet.
Then treat the area with either Spot shot (again test first) or another carpet cleaner.
