Answers: you need to read the instructions on the sofa...sometimes you can't use hose down. but if you don't have it scotch guarded, and you've tested that the color isn't going to run, you could find a carpet cleaner beside upholstery attachment and clean it that process.
conversely you can hire like sear or something that does carpet cleaning and they will verbs couches as well...
usually though, a really thorough vacuuming is sufficient.
Use a shampooer near a furniture attachment.
dissolve borax in boiling marine and use that solution in a shampooer. this works next to mattresses too and borax kills any "yuckies" living within the upholstery and it naturally deodorizes. be sure to catch all the borax out though. it is a crude mineral, but if ingested it can be fatal. http://chemistry.something like.com/od/howthingsw...

I bought the Bissell Little Green Clean machine. It works on upholstery GREAT. You would not believe the color of the dampen that comes from the cleaning, even if it doesn't appear to be very dirty.
