What do you use to clean a flat stove top? I was told not to use any cleaners, just soap and water.?

But the soap and water wont take everything off and clean it good.

Answers:
The cleaner/conditioner recommended by the manufacturer of your range is the best thing to use. The cleaner/ conditioner not only cleans the glass but applies a film to the glass to aid in the next cleaning and helps the glass to resist scratching. If you have stains that will not come off a special cleaner can be used to clean the hard to remove stains. "Bar Keepers Friend" which can be found on your local supermarket shelves is such a cleaner. Bon Ami is also a recommended cleaner for this purpose. After using these special cleaners you should follow up with the cleaner/conditioner to condition the glass.

The use of soaps and wash cloths leave a film of soap (animal fats) behind and can build up and create the tough to get off stains.

It is always recommended to use paper toweling on the glass and never a cloth that has been washed in soap as the cloth will leave a soapy film behind. The dish cloth should never be used as it is the easiest way to leave a film of animal fats on the glass.

at lowes or home depot they sell a cleaning product for flat cooktops
do you mean the black glass electric stoves? try letting some dawn dish washing liquid sit on the greasy parts then wash it off with plain water.
Believe it or not you can use a single edge razor blade to scrape off some kinds of burned on food. Like when a pot overflows. Never use a pot that overhangs the burner more than one inch.. otherwise you will get a burned on residue that will not come off. My husband did this when he was making soup for 75 people. Now the burner has a thin coat of black over it! grrrrrrrr
If I have any residue on my flat top stove surface, I shake a little baking soda over it and rub with a wet dish cloth. It will remove it with no problem at all. Don' waste your money on any products at the store for the flat surfaces. Baking soda works just as well and is certainly much cheaper!
Any soft cleanser like Soft scrub or Bar Keeper's Friend. They are the best at removing everything without damaging the surface. Most appliance stores sell a cleanser for flattops, but I think you can find it in most grocery stores now.
I have had 2 different glass top stoves. The first one was black, the one I have now is speckled with black and white. I always wipe it first with a clean sponge then spray with windex and wipe with a paper towel. If there is baked on grease or spillover then I take soft-scrub on a paper towel and scrub, then wipe off and then spray again with Windex. I do alot of cooking and after I clean it , it looks brand new. Best to clean it right after use and not let it build up.
If you're talking about a glass top stove, I clean mine with soap and water, dry it well, and about once a week or so, I use
Weiman Cook Top Glass Cook Top Cleaner. It's awesome. My stove top shines afterwards. It was here in the house when we moved in, but I think you can get it anywhere like Walmart or KMart. Just one bottle lasts a long time. Just follow the directions on the bottle!
I use soft scrub on mine and do it often so that nothing gets burned on. I tried the recommended cleaners but that is a joke, I rubbed my arms off and the stove would still have spots on it..
I have a ceramic flat top stove. There are products that are specially made to clean these stoves. I use one with a plastic scrubber made for non-stick pans to clean mine. I find soap and water leaves streaks if I don't rinse it well.
