Do you need to rinse dishes in hot water if they've been soaking in hot water?

Argument with my husband. He feels it doesn't matter if the water that he rinses the dishes with is cold if the dishes have been soaking in hot water. I think it is sanitary to soak them in hot and rinse them in hot. Please someone tell me if I've been doing it wrong for the last 20 years.

Answers:
It really doesn't matter.
Washing dishes by hand, you can't put your hands into water hot enough to kill a significant number of germs ... although somewhat ironically, very cold water can get cold enough to kill significant numbers of germs.
Still, it is the washing process and use of soap that helps reduce the number of germs on the dishes, so as long as you did a good job of washing in the first place, the temperature of the rinse water makes no significant difference.

LOL.I have the same argument with mine. I always use hot water. When I do the dishes I never use cold water.

actually, rincing them in cold water is better. try this ... if you have a double sink put the same amount of dish soap in each sink.. no water ... spread it around then in one sink run hot water trying to rinse the sink and cold in the other one. you will find that the sink you use cold water in to remove the soap the suds will go away faster than with the hot water. what this tells you is... cold water removes the soap better than hot... and you dont want to be eating soap so my suggestion is use cold water.
In home Economics we were told to fill a sink of hot water to was and a second of hot water with bleach to rinse. I rinse with hot water
When you rinse the dishes it's lukewarm to hot even it's been soaking in hot.Cuz most of all if it's soaking in hot water there's probably soap in the water too.I've been doing this for 25 years and I learned it from my mother, and she learned it from hers and so...you won the arguement.
use hot but then rinse them in cold
Cold water is okay for rinsing as long as you use hot to wash. Actually cold water gets rid of the soap better than hot. But, it doesn't really matter which you use to rinse with.use either.
In every food handlers class I've attended; a cap-full of bleach in the rinse water. Besides, if he's helping with the dishes, WHO CARES??? Let him use ICE WATER if it makes him happy!
I use hotwater if washing by hand. But most the time I just use our dishwasher and its always hot water in there. Me personally would use hot water, to me it seems to get rid of the soap better. But then again its how I was raised.
hopefully the soaking and washing sanitized you dishes. now time for the rinse. if you rinse them in cold water they will take a long time to dry, giving them a better chance for bacteria and germs to breed and grow in the moisture. then if you towel dry them theres a big chance the towel has germs and bacteria that has grown since the last time you dried dishes.
if you rinse in hot water. they will dry faster and stand less of a chance of being a breeding ground for bacteria. so the hotter the better, so they will dry faster.
buy a dishwasher thats what i did
hot for both
cold water will make them shine, rinse off soap better, if he`s really concerned about germs-get a diswsher
I use hot water to rinse. Mainly because I have a dilemma. Usually when I put hot water in the first sink (fill it first so I can start washing) it isn't as hot as when I fill the second sink to rinse even if I wait for the water to be warmed up. Then it doesn't even stay as hot as it is because the dishes are cold and they cool down the water. I don't change the washing water unless it gets too gross. SO I feel better washing in warmer water but rinsing in hot water that I KEEP suds free and as it will come out of the sink.

Hot rinse water also allows the dishes to air dry a little more easily if that is important to you.
well i use hot water for both. i just feel like it cleans it better. also if you use hot water for washing and then cold for rinsing it could make your glass dishes break... in your (or his) hand. this happened to my aunt once and my mother has always told me this. so that's just another reason i use hot to rinse.
