The upholstery tool of a steam cleaner would probably be much more effective.

you can use baking soda; sprinkle all over sofa and then remove with the hand-held tool on your vacumn cleaner this will elimates odor; for spots use Resove spot cleaner spray on and again use hand-held tool. Otherwise I recommend using the hand-held tool on your carpet cleaning machine; again use Resolve solutions for carpet cleanng machine; always follow directons on bottle.
If you don't have Resolve use Liguid all purpose detergent, about one cup; this is for your carpet cleaning machine.
Oxy-Clean works great for upolstery and carpet alike. Just add it to hot water and put in to a shampooer or just use a brush and scrub away.
Baking Soda works great for Step 1. I would use a steam cleaner with distilled water to finish the job.
