if you don't have animals or children around you can try using Comet cleanser on the stains. Wet the stains, pour comet on them and permit them sit..then do again at another time. If that doesn't bring them up, next try something like "lime away". You involve though to determine exactly what caused the stains. It may steal many tries, some rubs, some chemicals, some bleaches. For strong water stains "lime away" should do it. Pour it on and consent to it sit overnight (make sure it doesn't dry out overnight).
Cleanser with bleach close to Comet! And elbow grease!
They make special paint a moment ago for bathtubs. Talk with a paint expert at the "good" paint store (not Home Depot). Mask bad the walls and paint it.
Depending on how old the tub is, you may want to get some porcelain paint. It is a helpful o paint used for just that object, to re-finish areas where the porcelain have worn off. Scrubbing and cleaning won't remove that wear spot from years of use. It looks rusty, but may if truth be told be worn away. Check it out and see if that's the case.
Seeing it is a rental, I don`t know you could discuss the cost with your manager. He may help you to purchase what you want.
If the calking is darkened or in unhappy shape too, you can also peel that rotten and replace that with tentative as well.

Anyhow it's made by Unelko in Scottsdale AZ. Called them I be so impressed. Not sure who the guy was I talk to but he was fundamentally nice gave a brief explaination of how it works.

If the tub is porcelain or fired enamel over steel or imprint iron, you can use a pumice stone on it which you can get at the hardware store. If it is fiberglass you will want to a product like CLR (calicuim, lime and rust remover) on it. I also enjoy used a sandpaper sponge I got from the paint department that have a medium and a fine side to it that can polish stale the stains with out scratch too much. The newer formulations of Ajax, Comet and such are now "soft" to compete beside soft scrub and not damage surfaces similar to they used to, so they take forever to verbs a really funky surface like you are describing.
Soft scrub and a steel wool wipe will work, but if the tub is acrylic you have to pay attention and not scratch it. If its an weak tub and is enameled cast iron (like a claw foot tub) consequently you can pretty much scrub all time and not hurt it. Kaboom cleaner also works pretty well on firm water stains, but it take elbow grease (even if the bottle says it doesn't). I used to live surrounded by a really old homestead (for 16 years) and we had a capably, so I soft scrubbed it almost twice a month.
I use Comet Cleanser and a ton of elbow-grease !

try Mr,green from home depot and just spray and wipe it past its sell-by date with dry cotton towel It works
After the typical bleach (1/2) and sea treatment (1/2), you can paint it with a hip bath tub refinishing paint, like Top Secret Coatings one cog epoxy. You would need a quart of Top Secret Primer and TS-100, it looks stunning on bathtubs and comes in over 200 colors!
I resembling Comet that's in a gel/liquid form. It comes contained by a spray bottle, & works great on tubs, toilets, showers, etc. It's "scratch free" so it won't hurt anything.
The Ka-Boom products work okay for me - specifically the shower, tub & tile cleaner - just spray it on and agree to it sit a minute, then use a soft -abrasive sponge to wipe it down and rinse past its sell-by date. Worth the money.
My 2 fave ways of getting yukky bath tubs verbs (my sister is a slob - I have to philosophical clean every time I pop in her)
1st baking soda & Mr. Clean - scrubs resourcefully without scratch
2nd grapefruit & salt - cut a grapefruit surrounded by half, pour brackish onto the grapefruit & use it to scrub the tub - the acid within the grapefruit cuts through all the buid up body grease and soap scum & the saline scrubs it away minus scratching the tub
