Electric stove/oven...cleaning help?

My kids spill stuff in my electric stove constantly and just keep on cooking things in there before I am aware there is a mess. By the time I get to it, there is usually a build up of whatever ran over. I am afraid to use sprays for cleaning the oven because of the heating element. Is there anything else I can use?

Answers:
Look for Easy-Off Non-Caustic Formula. It doesn't use Lye as the base, instead it uses organic salts that are activated by heat. May also be called Easy-Off Fume Free Oven Cleaner. If you don't want to buy a commerical cleaner which makes cleaning a little easier, just put Dawn on the spill and let it soak on there for at least half an hour. Then use a nylon scrubber and a little elbow grease! Or just try the nylon scrubber first w/o water to see how much you can loosen up. Then add water.and scrub. Then try the dawn. Most spills will burn off when heated, too but the smell is bad or smoky depending on the spill. For real toughies, a good ol' Brillo pad and elbow grease will do it.

use easy off oven cleaner, it won't hurt the elements, and it works fairly good.

Easy Off - be sure to wear gloves and have ventilation though.
easy off oven cleaner that should do the trick
YOU COULD TRY USING BAKING SODA AND PERIXIODE MIX BUT CLEANERS WORK ON ELECTIC OVENS AND DO NOT HARM THE HEATING ELEMENTS, I HAVE HAD AN ELECTRIC OVEN FOR YEARS NOW AND THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM
"Simple Green" makes a good non toxic oven cleaner that also removes resin from tablesaw blades.

Citrus oils- mmm, good stuff.
With rubber gloves on your hands and plenty of good ventilation, use Easy-Off Oven Cleaner to clean the oven. Then go to a "Dollar Store" and buy an aluminum shield that will fit the bottom of your oven. This or aluminum foil has saved me from having to do a lot of oven cleaning!
