Any ideas to capture rid of the smell?

Since the fluid has probably dried and have been spellbound in the wood it is unlikely that you will acquire the stain out of the wood. You may have to collaborate with your tenant, explian to him what happened and ask if here is anything he can do to repair it.
Clean it with a vinegar & sea solution. Add a cup vinegar to a spray bottle and fill the rest next to water. You can even use straight white vineger.:)
Leave the shelf liner rotten and sprinkle the shelf with baking soda. Let it set for a few hours/overnight and vacuum or sweep it stale. Reapply the baking soda as often as needed until the odor go away. If it has totally dried the baking soda may not work. How something like sealing the wood shelf beside some type of paint or varnish, or a product called Kilz? It newly may seal up that smell too. You may want to head off an opened box of baking soda on the shelf subsequent to the bad spot to involve any lingering odors. Good luck.
