My stainless steel appliances are getting little rust spots on them. How can I get them off w/o scratching?

I live in a salty environment and the appliances are getting little rust spots all over them. How can I remove them with out scratching the surface. I scratched the fridge already.

Answers:
I think I can help. Go to the store and purchase a cleaner whose active ingredient is a chemical pronounced "de-lime-a-neen" This chemical is commonly found in many citrus based cleansers.

If you choose my answer not only will it remove the rust but your kitchen will smell really nice.

To prevent future rust any good stainless steel polish is effective in repelling moisture, the source of your problem.

Other answers:
try rubbing a little toothpaste on the rust spots
try rubbing a little toothpaste on the rust spots
i heard lemon juice is good for removing rust spots...try that
Toothpaste is a good idea, but you might try baby oil first since it's less abrasive than toothpaste. Then rub with Dawn, to remove the oil. I like to use rain-x monthly to prevent hard water particles from sticking (which is the cause of the rust)
We use what's called a "Magic Sponge".

The Magic Sponge is a soft cleaning pad . It's an innovative cleaning material that gets into grooves where dirt and grime are trapped. You'll be surprised how easily Magic Sponge picks up tough dirt, separating it from surfaces. And it does all that with just water alone. It's simple and easy to use - no fumes, gloves, brushes, machines, buckets, or chemicals required. This is because it is is made from a new cleaning material called melamine, that cleans deep in to the pores of every surface. This is without the use of any detergent just with plain water.

You can use it virtually all over the house to clean walls from crayon marks and clean floors from scuff marks. You can even use it outside the house on outdoor furniture, car interiors, bike chrome parts, and much, much more.

The Magic Sponge with melamine foam is truly the easiest way to clean surfaces with permanent stains or marks. Simply wet the sponge and rub lightly across the set-in dirt and grime. Watch the sponge magically erase stains and tough dirt from surfaces using only water. It is chemical free, environmentally friendly, safe and gentle to your hands and skin.

use CLR or lemon. lemon gets rid of oxidation
Use chrome cleaner and a soft cloth from the auto parts dept. Then to keep it from happening again use car wax. I use a product by Turtle Wax to clean the metal and then protect the finish by using a good car wax. Unconventional it may seem but think about the surface your are trying to protect and it works. Good Luck
