Can I wash a down comforter in the washing machine?

I am stationed in Germany and I dont speak German so taking it to the dry cleaners is kind of out of the question. Can I just put it in the washing machine? And do I air dry it outside or put it in the dryer if I can wash it in the washing machine?

Answers:
I have washed and dried my down comforter with great success.

1. Make sure it is the only thing being washed.
2. Wash on the gentlest cycle available and the mildest detergent you can find, Woolite is good.
3. Wash in cold water
4. DO NOT USE BLEACH
5. Buy tennis balls (3 should do it)
6. Put comforter and tennis balls in dryer on low heat
7. Dry comforter thoroughly before use.

By putting the tennis balls in the dryer with the comforter, the pounding of the balls thru the dryer keeps the feathers/down from clumping.

You can wash it in the washing machine, but air dry it.
You can wash it in the washing machine, but air dry it.
This was found through a google search.

"We recommend using a professional cleaner who will launder (not dry
clean) and thoroughly dry your comforter. It is O. K. to dry clean,
but this can leave a chemical odor. We do not recommend that you wash
your comforter in your washing machine, especially if you have an
"agitator" type washing machine. If a comforter should open while
being washed in your home, the down could cause your plumbing to clog
resulting in a flood of water in your home. If there is not room in
your dryer for the comforter to move freely, it could actually cause a
fire from the fabric overheating.Whomever washes your comforter, keep
in mind that the cotton shell will shrink 3 to 5 percent after drying.
After washing (or whenever storing), do not store it in plastic.
Allow it to air.
My experience with doing that was not wonderful. You will get bunches of feathers stuck together inside the comforter. You should find someone that speaks both English and German so they can help you get it dry cleaned.
wash it in the machine you can also dry then in the dryer on low and put tennis balls in with it to fluff up the feathers and so they dont all go to one side of the comforter
yes i wash mine all the time in my washing machine and dry it. depends on which brand of down com. you have. mine cost $100
wash it on gentle in large capacity washer and air dry it
Yes it can be washed, use cold water, and it can be dried in the dryer. I would use a low heat setting and put in a pair of clean sneakers or a couple of tennis balls this help to plump the down. If you don't use them your comforter will not have the fluffed effect..
i washed mine in my washer at home then hung it outside over the rail on the balcony until it was dry then i put it in the dryer on air dry with two tennis balls to fluff it up again.
I'm stationed in Germany too. Most of the posts I've been on have a dry cleaners right on post, or one pretty close by. Also, many business people speak English pretty well, so even one on the economy wouldn't bo so bad to go to. The guy who sold us our down comforter said it is okay to wash it, just do it in a big enough washer. He said it's not a good idea to dry it because the feathers will clump up. It's best to smooth it out and dry it flat, although that's really hard to do since I don't have a flat surface as big as the comforter, except the bed, but who wants to put something wet on the bed! So you can do it on your dining room table, and let the edges hang over a bit.
