It depends, what are they made of? Egyptian cotton HAS to be dry cleaned! Poly cotton - treat with an stain remover with enzyme action for at least 15 minutes. Fill the washer with water and add 1/2 cup bleach for up to 3 coats (unless they are XXL or bigger, then use up to 1 cup). Wash HOT on the longest setting.
100% Cotton? Pretreat the same, but for up to 30 minutes. Use HOT only if coats are pre-shrunk. You can cause up to 2% shrink otherwise. Use WARM if you're not sure. Wash with bleach only every other wash cycle, use bleach alternative or bleach for colors the rest of the time.
DO NOT dry them until you look them over. If anything remains, re-treat and wash again. Once they're dried, the stain is set.
The company he works for should be handling the laundry!

Let the washer machine fill up first, and as its near full when its filling add one cup of bleach, use a measuring cup. Hot water and no other detergents of any kind. Then put the coat in the washer machine, and wash normally. Hope this helps!
Hey, what about using Oxyclean? I've seen it at regular stores. But do not use bleach with it, just the oxyclean and normal detergent. If that doesn't work, I'd go with the bleach.

Use 1/4 Cup of Chlorine bleach & 1/2 cup of "BIZ" solution...in a wash tub filled with warm water...and soak the coats in this overnight... The next day, turn on HOT water...and finish filling the tub to full...and set it for the longest heavy duty wash...and they will come out BLINDING white.
Sorry, but 'blueing' is only to make already clean white fabric that isn't QUITE as WHITE as it should be...be REALLY WHITE...but ...it doesn't CLEAN.
BIZ is an enzyme buster...which the Chef's coats need...bcz most of the stains on them is protein (food)...and using bleach alone will just rot the fabric, not lift the protein stains off the threads.
fill your stationary tub with hot water, half way, add 2 cups of cascade dry dish washing soap, 1 cup Clorox and 1 cup of tide with bleach. I was always off on Mondays, so I did this Sunday right after work, threw all of my coats in and soaked them over night. Then Monday morning I would wash them in HOT water with Clorox and tide and 20 mule team borax (that took out that 'smell') rinse with Downy and hung out to dry. Honestly, its easier to take them to the dry cleaners and have them laundered, but sometimes you just don't have enough coats.
Soak in a solution of oxi clean and bleach..... if there are greasy spots like oil and sauces on it pre treat with either dish liquid or gumout sold in grocery stores, can also add citrus cleaning solution in with the soak. Let them soak overnight and for the better part of the next day then wash in Hot water with Tide and oxi clean and bleach. They should come out beautiful.

A product called IRON OUT - can be found in hardware section of a store. Directions for use is on the bottle. I swear by it.
Scrub soiled areas with Lestoil put in the washer and add lestoil to the wash water, Lestoil is really good for cutting grease and grime, you may have to rinse twice to get the smell of the Lestiol out of the chef coats. Do not over bleach or it will eventually yellow the fabric. Good Luck.
I was told to use dishwashing soap. Put it directly on the stains and rub in, let it sit for 24 hours and then wash it in hot bleach water. If the stains didn;t come out...dont dry it or you will set in the stain...repeat spot treatment.
