Go to a 99 cent store or Dollar store and buy a bottle of "Awesome" (yellow solution in clear bottle).
I began using this in carpet cleaner (using water I boiled on the stove) and the results are AWESOME!
I had two older dogs who saw need to make me use the carpet shampooer nearly weekly. This made the whole process very affordable! and I swear it worked far better than Bissell or any other commerical product sold specifically for carpet machines (did not damage machine either, still working strong five years later!)

Liquid Laundry soap and water. Just remember that Laundry soap is very concentrated, so don't use too much. Also, remember to rinse your carpets to get as much out as you can.
