This has happened to us...there is a tiny fuse inside that is burnt. the fuse itself only costs about 10.00 but to get someone in, it costs about 100.00. If your husband is handy, tell him to take off the back panel and check. My husband watched the repair man do it so that if it ever happens again he can do it himself. Good Luck

The belt is broken or stretched way out of shape.

sounds like a burnt out motor to me, call a repair technician to come fix it.
that kind of thing can happen in any device that has a motor. if you leave it running when it does that you're eventually going to see the "blue smoke" which will be accompanied by a rather unpleasant smell. get a repair guy.
It could be the drive belt, the fan used to circulate air, the motor for the drive belt, the heating element could be shorting. Sometimes it's cheaper just to buy a new dryer rather than spend alot of money trying to fix it.
The switch is going out. Unless you are Laura Ingles get a repairman to come out and get this fixed....it is not a big deal. Good luck!
When ours did this the belt had broken. Replacement belt about 15 bucks. You have to unscrew & lift the lid, and take the front off it. Then you will see the tub, the belt goes around it. If your husband is handy, he can replace the belt.
