Can cleaning be too much of a good thing?

Can overuse of chemical cleaning products make you sick? If someone has a really clean, spick & span house, but her kids are sick all the time, should she cut down on the housework?

Answers:
My Dad thinks kids should eat more dirt. It will help them to keep from getting sick. That's extreme, but in all honesty, he has a point.

By keeping our homes too clean, anytime one of our children gets exposed to a new germ, they go down hard.

Small exposure to germs is not a bad thing at all.

Yes! cleaning too much can actually cause many immune diseases later on in life for the kids... my fiance's mom cleaned like crazy, now both her kids have chron's disease. while they are not necessarily related, I believe kids need to experience germs and bacteria - these things actually strengthen the immune system.

I would cut down on cleaning products that are to strong around kids i use sic & span and Mr. Clean and my daughter is fine.
Possibly. Your house isn't as dirty as you think it is, I promise. Maybe try to cut down on the chemicals, not the housework. You can still clean your house without using chemicals all over everything. Things don't need to be constantly disinfected. Maybe after your kids are sick, disinfect doorknobs, surfaces, and lightswitches, etc. with Lysol to kill germs but leave it at that for a while. Keep in mind that when you get rid of ALL the germs, you're not letting your kids immune systems come into contact with things that they need to learn how to combat. Immune systems need some germs to learn how to fight infections, bacteria, and viruses.
Maybe your kids haven't been exposed to germs enough to get immune to them. Yes cleaning products can make you sick especially if they release harmful fumes. Cut down on the cleaning. Germs can be helpful. If you love cleaning so much make a job out of it. Make money off other people's dirty homes.
I recently had a home health care nurse come to our house to visit our new born baby and we asked her the same question. She said that chemical products are safe when used correctly but a overly clean house can cause you to not gain advantages of your body creating immunity because you and your family are not being exposed to viruses. They actually recommend having a dog to constantly bring in dirt/ viruses and other things to help in building your child's immunity before preschool or daycare because that exposure will help.
Hope this helps!
certain chemicals can cause what's known as 'chemical pneumonia' which is really an irritation to the soft tissues in the lungs. ammonia, bleach, and other cleaning products (dow scrubbing bubbles, for instance) have fumes or vapors which can cause this condition. if your children are sick often, keep a log of when they get sick, write it down. each day that you put in an entry, also list the chemicals you used that day. this exercise is one that an allergist would give to you to pinpoint an allergy. I hope this helps.
I find Grumpdawg06's answer interesting. I had not heard of that before.

I don't think you can clean too much. I don't think your kids are sick all the time from too much cleaning. You know not to use chemicals in a closed up room, I am sure?

Kids bring home germs from other places, school, playground, etc. and pass it on to other family members. If you have two or three kids, they continue to pass it back and forth.

Bringing in a dog is crazy. That will give you more cleaning. I can't see how dog fur, poop and pee will make your life better.

Depending on what the kids have, cold, flu, allergies, has a lot to do with it too. I would ask the doctor before I quit cleaning my house..
