One of the finest hearth rug stain removers on the market today is a juice product called, "Incredible". It have worked on every stain I have tried it on and instructions should be followed such as blotting up the excess, and not rubbing it. It can be purchased at "Bed, Bath, and Beyond", and some grocery stores. Excellent product. On your distinctive stain, it may take several applications.
Tobacco resin? Well OK, it will be river soluble so I would first crush up the hard parts and brush free adjectives that you can get loose that course, then you could soak near a towel using water or alcohol (70%) and thoroughly pinch up what is left. Let dry and repeat as required. At some point probably from the onset you could sprinkle some baking soda on it to prevent the sticky member from getting worse. Or you could pour bleach on the rug and have a big bullseye to direct everyones attention to where on earth you cleaned your bong.
