teh smell is UNDER the carpet probably in the cushioning or in teh wood eneath the carpet.you may not be able to deodorize without ripping up the carpet in that area.

Call a professional carpet cleaner. You are going to need something stronger than the average bear.

Perhaps you should bring in the professionals.Call a carpet cleaning service
Whatever they spilled probably leaked down into the padding if it still smells bad. You could try renting a deep cleaner.
Try baking soda, if that doesn't work get a professional to do it.
get that new 0 Oder
Have you tried baking soda?
The odor is probably in the padding beneath the carpet. If it's near the edge you can pull back the carpet and clean the pad itself. Otherwise, you might try soaking the floor and sponging it up many, many times. This is time consuming -- you pour a glass of water on the spot then sponge it up with towels until it's almost dry and keep repeating it. Put baking soda in the water. The baking soda will help to neutralize the odors. You might pour a glass of water/baking soda on the area and let it sit for half an hour then sop it up but you'll risk damaging the wood underlayment.
I've heard vinegar will sometimes neutralize odors, too, but I'd only try it as a last resort. It smells itself so I have never understood using it personally.
Good luck!
Did you clean the whole carpet? Maybe the smell is something coming from a different spot on the carpet. Maybe the spill sat for a little while and somehow the odor has had a chance to really set in the carpet. Depending on what was spilled, I guess you could try Febreze for carpets, that is if there is one. good luck
