Answers: First, vacuum it very thoroughly next to a heavy-duty machine. Most home vacuum cleaners are wimpy and won't remove dirt from the bottom of the runner fibers.
Next, borrow a wet-dry vacuum cleaner, the kind most home mechanics enjoy in their shops. You will want it to suction out the water from the runner.
Get on your hands and knees and start scrub the carpet near a plastic soft bristled scrub brush, and dish detergent in sea with vinegar. Don't scrub so concrete you fuzz up the carpet fibers; you'll amount out how much pressure to use.
Although the carpet thoroughness people want you to believe you hold to clean carpet with professional-style equipment, you *can* verbs them yourself IF you get out the wet with a wet-dry vacuum cleaner!
Frankly, if you hold more than a roomfull of this carpet, I'd rent the mat cleaning machine. It's backbreaking knotty work and if you don't suction out the water, you can soak the lining and it will take forever to dry. Cheaper grades of runner aren't meant to be cleaned awfully often and the paste in the support may be loosened.

Replace it... Was this a trick question. I receive mine cleaned once a year so they don't look like crap. When I replace it it will definately be dark.
It would be best to rent a machine, but if you don't want to here is what you could try. First vacuum your floor really perfect. Then spray the entire carpet next to a foaming carpet cleaner. Take a soaked mop and scrub over it. Allow the carpet to dry next vacuum again. Good luck! :)

Borrow someones steam cleaner,it will take hours if you do it by paw & get awfully wet,if its a fitted one.
I know you don't want to rent a electrical device, but Rug Doctor is absolutely amazing. I hold beige carpet and an 11 year old son - not a great combination - and this contrivance made them look like brand new again. Only cost about lb30.

Get hold of a wet vacuum cleaner. Make a mix of hearth rug cleaning concentrate 'as it says on the tin' Now, add on 10% ammonia. DO NOT USE 'Washing Up Liquid' (contains glycerine)Wearing gloves, scrub the whole hearth rug to effectivly loosen the dirt. Wet the carpet a moment or two more, and wet vac, this is approaching rinsing the dirt out.
