Blood Stains
These instructions are for removing blood from washable fabrics. Blood will be removed more easily from cotton or cotton blends than from 100% synthetic materials.
Begin by blotting up as much stain as possible. Place an absorbent pad underneath the stain. Keep another absorbent pad moist with an enzyme product over the stain for 30 minutes. Enzymes such as Biz and Axion are available in the grocery store. One-half teaspoon should be mixed with 1/2 cup of warm water. Other laundry products which state they act upon protein stains may be substituted.
For strong fabrics, tamp with a spoon or brush. To tamp, place the stained area directly onto a work surface. Tap the brush or spoon on the stained area vigorously. While tamping, blot frequently by pressing hard on the stain with an absorbent material. It is important to remove the loosened stain immediately.
Flush with cold water. Do not use hot water because it will set a blood stain! If some stain remains, flush with an ammonia solution, consisting of 1 tablespoon household ammonia and 1/2 cup water. The ammonia should not have added color or fragrance. Then flush with water and blot.
Continue stain removal if necessary by flushing with a vinegar solution, consisting of 1/3 cup white vinegar and 2/3 cup water. Flush again with water and blot.
If the blood stain is not completely removed, bleach with 3 % hydrogen peroxide applied with a medicine dropper. Add a drop of ammonia to the hydrogen peroxide on the material for better stain removal. Flush with water.
If the blood stain is on wool or silk, eliminate the step using the enzyme product solution.
Before any stain removal process is started, you must remember that every stain removal method is not suitable for every fabric. Be sure to test each stain removal product in an inconspicuous spot such as a seam allowance.
