My 5 yr. old Kenmore washer just quit.It fills with water but northing else happens. Whats up??

Lot of good answers. When washers do this there are 5 things that can go wrong. First is the Lid switch. Get a screw driver and put the screw driver in the slot where the peg in the lid would go. If you can hear a click, it's not that switch. (If there is no peg, it is magnetic, so get a magnet. You won't really hear a click but it will start working if it is turned on) Next is the timer. Try advancing the timer a little bit and starting it again. If nothing happens, try to get the washer to drain for the next test. On the load size selector switch, during a fill, switch it to the smallest size load, once the water stops, make it one size bigger, so on and so forth. If you do this test and it starts working, it is your load size switch. If that is faulty it can cause your washing machine to overflow. If this doesn't fix it, then you have the motor and the transmissions. If it doesn't hum when on, it's the motor, otherwise it could be either and you would have to open it up to find out. Either way, it is cheaper to get a new one when you add labor to the part.

probably need a new motor or belt, call Sears

Sounds like the motor burned out....call Sears or repairman.
If you wait awhile does it agitate at all?
Mine did that and the timer/timing was off, it would agitate now and then, but it wasn't a wallet breaker to fix. Good luck, and happy future laundry days!
Solenoid? Ask the Sears repair people.
your water pump is shot
Check the switch that registers that the lid is shut (if a top loader) or the door is closed (if a front loader). All washers have a safety mechanism that prevents it from entering the spin part of the cycle if the lid is up (or door is open).
Make sure you have power to the unit, but it sounds like a water pump. Washers are not fun to work on...I'd call a service tech.
time to get a new one
It's probably a broken lid switch. They are plastic on these machines & prone to breaking where the screws attach to the cabinet.
There is a little switch built in that tells the washing machine when the lid is closed (on mine, a little white rod attached to the lid pushes into a hole to trigger the switch). The machine will fill with water but it won't run a full cycle if the lid isn't closed.
If the rod is broken, try pushing the switch with a pen or something, if it starts to run, there you go. If not, it might be a broken connection in the switch itself.
Then again, it might be something else completely different. Good luck!
