I'm wondering because I'd really like to be getting something more environmentally friendly (i.e. Method brand, etc.) than the average detergent, but they all seem to be high efficiency detergents. Obviously I'd like my clothes to still be really clean, and I wasn't sure whether I would get lesser results with HE detergent in a regular machine. (The washer I use is a smallish stacked washer/dryer in my building, and while it's pretty new, it's not, unfortunately, high efficiency.) I've looked online, but no one seems to have covered this -- they've only covered use of regular detergent in HE machines, not the other way around. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I have a Maytag top loader (not high efficiency). Without realizing it, we used Tide he in this machine several times. We experienced no problems in getting the laundry clean. So, the answer to your question is yes.
Other answers:
yes,but less than half the regular amount
yes,but less than half the regular amount
as I understand, the HE detergent is just designed to provide less sudsing, because the new machines preform better with less suds.
Its not more powerful or "better" in any other way than that...
Good luck!
yes they just don't make as much suds
