saddle soap you can get it in the shoe polish department cleans like a dream and also preserves the leather too. Keeps it supple, and won't let it dry out and get brittle and crack. Use with a soft cloth and follow directions.

If it black, try a banana skin. Otherwise get a good brand of cleaner and nourisher.
Go to Walmart in the automotive department and get a bottle of McGuires Leather Cleaner And Conditioner.

I just bought a new leather love seat and recliner. The pair came with a "kit" for cleaning and spot removal. Ask a local furniture store what they recommend and if they sell the kits in their store. As a side note, my kit did NOT work to clean off an ink pen mark. I used hairspray on a q-tip and then treated the area with the leather kit provided. Worked well.
