Does fabric softener lessen towels' absorption.?

I heard that if you add fabric softener (like Bounce) to a dryer full of towels that you will lessen the towels ability to absorb water. Is this true?

Answers:
usually any kind of softener either liquid or sheets will lessen the ability of towels to absorb water. consider softener much like a wax on your car. it looks and feels good but resists moisture.

most people use too much softener. you can cut down by half in most cases. also make sure you are not drying a too high of a temp and drying for too long..

Other answers:
absolutely true.
absolutely true.
yes....i hate when people use it...it defeats the purpose of a towel....
Yes because of the wax in the softener. Try clorox 2 to remove wax buildup.
yes. if you read on the washing instructions, it specified not to use any fabric softener on the towels.
I have heard it said you can use it half the time without this happening, but I NEVER use it on towels or cleaning rags. My mom uses it on every load and her towels are worthless except to stand on.
