what would be the best method to get mildew out of clothing?

Answers:
Take the mildewy clothing outside and brush off any loose mold growth. (You don't want those spores floating around your house.)

2. Leave fabric in the sun to dry out - heat and sun kill mildew.

3. Presoak remaining stains in cold water, then wash in hot water with detergent. Allow to dry in the sun.

4. If stains still persist, sponge the area with diluted chlorine bleach (use 2 tbsp. bleach to 1 qt. water). After about 10 minutes, rinse.

5. Launder as usual, rinse and allow to dry in the sun.

The most impostant thing is the sun. Sunshine kills mildew.

I'm not too sure about spots, but I had some fabric that smelled of mildew and I put it in the wash with a cup of vinegar, it came out smelling like new. And that was after I tried oxy clean and a host of other things.

Removing mildew

* Lemon juice and salt
Moisten stain with a mixture of lemon juice and salt. Spread in the sun to bleach. Rinse thoroughly.
* Peroxygen bleach
Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of sodium perborate or a powdered bleach containing sodium perborate or potassium monopersulfate with 1 pint (0.47 liters) of water. Use hot water if it is safe for the fabric; otherwise, use lukewarm water. Sponge the stain or soak the stained area in the solution, or sprinkle the dry powder directly on the dampened stain. Let solution or powder remain on the stain 30 minutes or longer, then rinse thoroughly. If mildew stains have been on the fabric for some time, it may be necessary to soak the fabric in the bleach solution overnight. Applying sodium perborate solution at or near the boiling point may remove stubborn stains. Be sure this treatment is safe for the fabric.

Lots of places recommend bleach - but that's harsh even on fabric that can tolerate bleach.
If it has mildew on it, it is ruined already ~ so you won't mind trying something a little risky. Try this:

Have you heard of X14 mildew stain remover? It works GREAT on SOME clothes. On OTHERS, it may remove the dye (not unlike bleach). BUT, before you use it make SURE your washer is filled up and ready to go. Spray it on, and watch as the mildew disappears. AS SOON as it is gone, dunk the item in the water.

You may also try a solution of one tablespoon bleach to a gallon of HOT water. Allow the item to soak. It may take a while. THIS may also remove the dye from your item if you use too much. SOMETIMES it may remove it no matter HOW careful you are.
GOOD LUCK!!
Scrub it and soak in milk. Milk will take the mildew out.
i wash my in hot water in gain. the smell come out!
