Bar keepers friend type of cleanser will do the job. It is a type of cleanser. Works on copper pan bottoms. Good stuff..

i haven't ever had any troble with teflon pans but if the bottoms are copper try to clean it with ammonia or salt mixed in vinegar like when you clean a penny

Do you mean the under side of the pot?
If so Bon amie(sp) or a steel wool pad and baking soda might work. once you get them clean put soap on the bottom next to the heat sorce that will keep them from blackening.

Believe it or not. Soak the bottoms in tea or tomato soup.
Use a s.o.s pad and redo if necessary....
Scrub them with a stainless steel scrubber. They are brilliant at getting burnt on stains off anything and they don't leave scratch marks.
I've found that baking soda and a damp scrubbing pad are great for removing lots of things from pots and pans. If the strange color is on the outside of the pan though, you'll want to consider using something else.
Here's something else that my mother showed me for making frying pans easy to clean: While they're still hot, put a few drops of dish detergent and water in the pan. Let it sit while you eat. Clean-up afterwards should be a breeze.
