What can you substitute for dishwashing liquid?

Well you can wash dishes with dirt... seriously.
But me thinks that's not what you're after...
'Sterile' cleaning... hot water... no hot water a bit of bleach does the trick(also purify for drinking BUT not the same amount)! Clorox used to list the appropiate amounts but the lawyers probably made them remove it and replace it with'CAUTION- not an eyewash".
Using lard is a recipe you probably don't want and 'modern' solutions have replaced that with those miracle substances... that poison our drinking water.
Need those bubbles than laundry detergent can do it... but milder
solution may be your shampoo. Not all detergents/shampoos the same either... RINSE well regardless if dirt or bleach or detergent/shampoo.
Which is why dishwashers use less energy and water!
Even with using electricity... where do you think your hot water comes from? Way less hot water being used is way dishwasher more efficient(less expensive)...

Shampoo works very well. If you're really desperate yucca root will lather and do well. Laundry detergents are a distant third but still better than greasy dishes.

Baking soda works great. You would not have to put up the awful smell of bleach, either. It is also good for cleaning a variety of other things as well without worrying about the slightly harmful effects of name-brand cleaners.
Bubble solution.
Borax or baking soda will do it.If you have a 2 bowl sink, fill the first with the borax or ect., Then put a few drops of bleach in the 2nd.We did this when we did not have electricity for 13 days after hurricane Wima.Use a dish rack with a towell underneath to.

I have used shampoo, then my next would be laundry detergent. I would also use bleach or the Orange pine-sol to disinfect the dishes before I washed them. Just to make sure that they are truely free of germs. I guess you can use rubbing alcohol after washing them and then rinse that off will help kill the germs.
Try a small amount of a gentle laundry detergent and rinse the dishes really well. (It would be better if the laundry detergent did not include a fabric softener.)
You can use hand soap, shampoo, and even bar soap.
Perhaps some Borax. Soak dishes/pans in hot water with a little bleach added if that"s all you got. Got some S.O.S. pads? Hot water by itself will do with a little "elbow grease".
I don't think it would be good to substitute because your glassware would come out cloudy. Maybe shampoo or that liquid bath soap, come to think of it might work, if you are really stuck.
A touch of bleach will do the job.
