How do I get my carpet to stop smelling like dog?

I recently moved into my aunt's old house and it smells like dog hair. The carpet has been shampooed and I have used some kind of arm & hammer foam on it, but the smell keeps coming back. I'm tired of smelling like dog , please help!

Answers:
dilute one tbsp of liquid fabric softener in 4 cups of water....... put in an atomizer bottle and spray carpets before you vacuum..... it works

Other answers:
I hate to tell you this but the smell of dog can permeate not only the carpet but the underlay. The best way to get rid of the smell is to rip out all the carpeting and underlay and replace it or put down new flooring. Sorry, I know that's probably not the answer you wanted.

You could try some of the hints here but I think you've pretty much already exhausted any of these possibilities

How to Rid Carpets of Pet Odors
Do visiting friends know you have a dog--before Fido bounces into the room? Just because you have a pet doesn't mean your carpet has to smell like him.

Steps:
1. Always clean up pet messes as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

2. Identify the odiferous areas of your carpet. If you're not sure where they are, darken the room and turn on a black-light bulb to highlight any dried accident spots.

3. Deep-clean the problem areas using a water-extraction carpet-cleaning machine or a carpet-shampoo machine and cool water only--no chemicals or cleaners. (To rent or buy one of these machines, look under "Carpet and Rug Cleaners' Equipment and Supplies" or a similar heading in the yellow pages.)

4. Sprinkle an enzyme-containing pet-odor-neutralizing powder (available at pet stores or your vet's office) on the affected areas. Pet-odor-neutralizing powders contain live bacteria and enzymes that digest odor-causing protein and bacteria, permanently removing it from the deepest fibers in your carpet. These products also contain a mild cleanser that can help remove discoloration. Alternatively, you can use borax powder or baking soda, but they are less effective in eliminating stubborn odors.

5. Let sit for 8 hours.

6. Vacuum the treated areas. Let sit for 24 hours.

7. If odor remains after you have treated the carpet with an enzyme odor neutralizer, repeat the treatment as needed to eliminate lingering odors.

8. Understand that in severe cases where the soiling has occurred for an extended period of time, you may need to replace the carpet padding.

9. If your pet continues to eliminate in inappropriate areas, treat the underlying cause. Does your pet have easy access to the outdoors or to a litter box? Is your cat demonstrating an aversion to her kitty litter? Is your furry friend suffering from separation anxiety, loneliness or stress? See How to Correct Bad Behavior in Dogs and How to Correct Bad Behavior in Cats for more information.

Overall Tips:
For pet stains on your carpet, see How to Remove Pet Stains.

Overall Warnings:
Avoid using household cleaners, ammonia and vinegar on urine stains. The strong smell may draw your pet back to the spot to cover the strong stuff with his own scent.

Steam-cleaning urine-stained carpeting can set stains and odors by bonding the protein into the fibers.

Tips from eHow Users:
Use a citrus cleaner to prevent recurrence by eHow Friend
If you follow the enzyme and shampoo treatment with a citrus cleaner, a cat will be less likely to urinate again on that carpet. Citrus has a tendency to discourage cats from urinating. In fact, Fresh Step came out for short time with a citrus-scented litter because citrus tends to be an effective air freshener. Cats wouldn't use it, so they quickly took it off the market.

I usually try to soak up the urine on the carpet as soon as I notice it. I then sprinkle table salt on the spot and leave it there for a few hours, then vacuum it up. This seems to absorb any moisture that was missed.

have you tried using anti-bacterial spray? you can try sending it to the laundry's...
Try the RugDoctor.
I had really good luck with a product called Kids N Pets. It smells sort of minty-lemony - not like detergent. I found it at Wal Mart next to the carpet cleaning products. Worked on the smells from my 4 cats and my 6-year-old.

Hope this helps.
shoot the dog and throw out the carpet no only kiddin about the dog but throw the carpet oot then steam clean the floor..
get rid of dog?
If odor persits,
get rid of carpet?
If this doesn't work,
get rid of nose?
Ha.
Use Febreeze. It comes in many differents types. There is also a Febreeze room freshner too. Using both really has eliminated the dog orders in my home.
FEBREZE...right after u vacumn
The only thing I know is you will have to pull up the carpet and pull out the cushion or padding, let the floor dry all the way then spray Pet De-orderizer. Then let that dry, then you will have to buy new padding and have it installed and then put your carpet down and shampoo the carpet.
I had to do this when we moved into my sister-in-laws house. I even had to buy new cabinets because she use to let her animals sleep in them.
