If you don't want to buy one or can't afford one or don't have the storage room, there are several places you can rent one. I even have see them in some supermarkets. Home centers have them and also places that rent them along with dozens of other tools. If you are going to get the best, check around or get some manufacturers names and visit their web sites. People who have one can best tell you their preferences. Get lots of answers before making a purchase.
Remember you will probably only use it 2 or 3 times a year.
(a multifunction machine more often)

Eureka Alantis, Works GREAT, easy to clean and carpet is dry in less then 4 hours , Someone reccommended it to me and then after I bought mine I was pleased and remain pleased with the results..
I have a Bissel. If they are good or not depends on what you want to spend. Mine cost in the $90 range and doesn't do too bad, but it could do better.
Look for a portable steam cleaner , on today's carpets these work great for cleaning carpets. Shampoo method or bonnet cleaning method are good methods for certain applications (Shag carpet, Commercial carpet, etc...). But for general home maintenance of your carpets extracting method (steam cleaner) is the best. Easy to use, easy to handle, and great to extract out those emergency spills.Helpful hint: On spills use your steam cleaner as soon as possible before the spill dries and sets into the carpet. If you don't have a machine available absorb up what you can with towels then place a wet towel on the spill to keep it damp so it don't dry, then rent a steam cleaner to extract it out or call a company in for a spot removal. Do not try rubbing it out with with solutions, this is where it can do permanent damage and stain your carpet. So having a steam cleaner in your house is a great investment. DO NOT FALL FOR THE VACUUM THAT CAN SHAMPOO YOUR CARPETS.
If you want a really great vacuum and shampoo system you should buy a Kirby. It's a brand of vacuum that is the BEST. It sucks the dirt all the way from under the carpet and padding. Then it comes with attachments for shampooing. Look up Kirby vacuums on the net and it should come up. Oh by the way they are somewhat expensive, but they are the best. The vacuum is heavy, but it has a drive switch that makes the vacuum do the work for you. It's awesome. Actually the Kirby company will come to your home and do a demonstration. They will clean one of your areas for free. If you like it and want one they will set up payment arrangements. Oh and the shampoo part is great because it deposits a light foam that pulls the dirt out of the fabric of the carpet and you just vacuum when it's dry. It only takes about 3 hours to dry since it's such a light foam. The vacuum works so great that you don't have to shampoo as often also.
