Why do people mask smells with stuff like Febreze instead of cleaning the item?
Answers:
Probably because it's a convenient shortcut, and because the tv commercials really do influence people to buy their product.
I don't use Febreze or other chemicals. I'd either clean an item, or at least hang it outdoors to freshen up (this does work for some odors).

People are basicly lazy. It is easier to spray them clean
Febreze is a fast, efficient way to freshen things you may not have TIME or FUNDS to clean at the time! Big items such as slipcovers, curtains, etc....
Some things don't handle being washed frequently very well. It's great for hockey and football equipment.
Because some things are just too hard to clean and get smells out of, such as a couch or seats in the car.
