How do you get rid of tarnish on coins?

I have an old coin that is almost totally black from tarnish.

Answers:
Depending upon the metal composition, it may not be advisable to clean the coin at all. If it has potential value, take it to a professional.

I have several old coins. When I found them I thought I would never get them clean.I tried lots of things, but the very best way to clean them is.....Depending on the coin,if its copper...first you let it soak in ketchup for about 2 hours. Then, along with how I do all other coins,I get a non gel toothpaste such as Creast. With a tooth brush, gently I scrub away the years of grime. After they are clean I rinse them with water.Make sure you dry them completely.I keep some of my coins in old pharmacy pill bottles and those plastic M&M containers.Always wipe your coins with a soft towel or paper towel after you handle them. The oils from your skin can cause them to tarnish. Also never keep the silver type and the copper type coins in the same container.I hope this helps.Good Luck!♥This does take a lot of patience, but it's worth it.♥
For value's sake do not clean old coins.

If you don't care about value then try acetone the pure stuff not nail polish remover.
Use regular toothpaste (no gel) and soft bristle tooth brush, gently rubbing in circular motion. Then rinse, make sure coin is dried afterwards.
My grandmother would use either vinegar or that silver clean stuff that cleans jewelry.... That was about 7 years ago when we did that. She died in 04 :( Anyways....I was wondering how do you zoom out like that with your avatar? I would love to do that!
