Why do stains come back days after the carpet cleaners are gone?

ROFLMAO!

Sorry to laugh but I had the same issue in an apartment I had rented years ago. And it wasn't funny. The carpet was pure skank and landlord refused to do anything about it. I called in three different professional carpet cleaning companies and the clean look would last for about half a day. By the next morning those damn stains were popping back up like a ghosts coming back to haunt me. I was finally told that the carpet was beyond cleaning and should be trashed. I just moved out.

Seeky bastards. I can't figure it out myself, maybe they were never gone to begin with just covered up?
because you can never truly get the chemicals out of the carpet. (The ones you used to clean the stain.)Those same chemicals attract dirt....
The issue, I believe is that the carpet isn't truly dry (though it may feel like it is) when they leave. So when the carpet fully dries the stains show their ugly selves once again if they weren't treated properly. Many carpet cleaning services depend upon this so they don't have to spend so much time on the truly tough stains.
You may find that the pad under the carpet harbors the stain material and leeches back up after cleaning.
Maybe because while they are cleaning the carpet it is wet, and blends in. Once dry it is visible again.

I clean my own, and what I use is Tide laundry detergant. It leaves your house smelling clean and fresh and does a gret
job on cleaning the carpets.
There is a stain in the carpet padding. As the carpet dries from the top side the stain migrates ("wicks", in effect) from the pad which is still damp and appears on the carpet. It could also be from residue left in the carpet from the cleaning solution or mineral deposits in the water. Even if the carpet is steam cleaned, the carpet retains some moisture. I solved this problem by buying a steam cleaner and using only distilled water for both the initial cleaning and the final rinsing. If you don't want to invest in a machine then have your carpet cleaning company prespot the stain and rinse with clear water several times after they are done cleaning.
In the padding for sure!
