What is the best way to clean a stove top?

really spray it down with Clorox clean up and walk away for about a half hour. I mean SOAK IT,BABY! When you come back it'll wipe off nice and easy and be mostly dry.

Pour vinegar over the dirt and use an old toothbrush to scrub off the sticky stuff. Rinse well. Repeat if desired.
You MUST specify what type of stove top? gas burner or electrical burner with coils or electrical with glass top. Very important the difference between these three different types of tops.
carberator cleaner ,wd40 make sure there isnt a pilot burning if its a gas stove ,i just clean one that wasnt extreemly bad with mr clean full strenght and one of those rough sponges
1. Spray liberally with Cillit Bang (or equivalent powerful stove cleaner)
2. Leave to soak in for 20 mins
3. Scrub well with abrasive scourer
4. Wipe down with cloth
As was said previously, it does depend on the top itself. If it's glass...I've been using oven cleaner spray. I wipe off the top, then I spray it with a fast acting oven cleaner and then I wash dishes or find something to do for about 20 minutes, I come back and wipe. I have used Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and must agree it's one of THE best inventions in a very long time. The M.E. is best tried after the oven cleaner spray has been wiped and rinsed, etc. I just found a new product [new to me] it's a degreaser I found in the dishwashing liquid section of my grocery store [The Real Canadian SuperStore] it's pink and about $7.00 for a huge bottle. This stuff can cut through grease like I've never seen before. Try an engine degreaser - I found one by Castrol that I've used to remove grease from all sorts of things. They are highly corrosive so wear rubber gloves and do not let them sit on the surface for too long or they'll damage your finish.
