I wouldn't listen to those guys. There is a thousand microns to 1 mm. Some paints have to be measured when applying it such as SEKA with an average of 600 microns, You should use about 400 microns and can mesure it with a tool called a wet film gauge. If it's new plaster, first coat it with a watered down coat of emulsion to kill the porousity as it will soak in.
