When hiring a local contractor for home repairs/remodeling, how do you check out credentials & references?

Answers:
Check his license and check with any state board that licenses contractors. Ask for references. If possible visit sites of their work. Even just to get ideas for your own remodeling. Also check the local Better Business Bureau. Google them for legal proceedings.

They should be licensed and ask the contractor for references and actually talk with the people
BBB-check with the BetterBusinessBureau in your state.
Ask him for phone numbers / addresses of previous customers and check them out for quality of work.
Better Business Bureau, you can search by name, category or license number. Good luck. www.bbb.com
