I ran across a salesperson who posted on a blog for a flooring company a while back. All makers of hardwood flooring basically get their wood from the same places. So from manufacturer to manufacturer there is essentially little difference, besides color, width, warranty, finish etc. Some people will say X flooring is bad or y flooring is better. But ALOT depends upon proper installation and a level floor. If your floor is even a little unlevel you may be replacing in a very short period of time.

Hardwood looks gorgeous and increases the resale value of your home. It does come with a price though. You will need to maintain every 10-15 years. That means refinishing or just giving a new coat of what ever finish. Yes you can "fix" some blemishes that you otherwise must live with on laminate. Kids, pets or high traffic can make the time between maintenance quite short. However, some people love the richness, feel and personality of hardwood. What ever your subfloor you need to properly attach the hard wood flooring. If you have slab or concrete, laminate may be your best call because it floats.

Engineered is good because it will not expand and contract like solid hardwood. It has layers that are perpendicular to each other. Engineered hardwood is thinner than hardwood and can be just as expensive. I am thinking of this for my 107 yr home because I live in a humid locale.

Laminate is good for those with pets and kids. If you get a good insulator to go beneath you can eliminate alot of that "clicking" sound you get with high heels. Generally it is less exepensive, so you won't feel so bad replacing in 15-20 years. I want to install bamboo flooring in my bedroom and would just place runners or a large area rug so I won't get cold feet in the morning.

As far as carpeting I am not too sure. I have only looked around a little bit. I think the biggest trick for carpet is a good pad. One that has a moisture barrier for kids or for pets is more expensive, but can save alot of heartache and extend the life of whatever you choose.

The best place I can offer for hardwood/engineered/laminate flooring is www.lumberliquidators.com They offer an impressive array of flooring in different grades, ie. few blemishes to larger knotholes for character. Their prices are the best I have found. Besides, Bob Villa is on the website. What more could you ask for? I hope that helps a little bit!

hardwoods, and berber carpet in the bedrooms
hardwoods, and berber carpet in the bedrooms
I don't know anything about laminate so can't help you there but for the bedrooms I would suggest carpet since you mostly walk around barefoot in the bedroom. Go with a frieze pile (as opposed to berber, etc.) since it wears better and feels nice and lush under bare feet. Also for the bedrooms I would suggest investing in a premium pad. Look for one that is mold and allergen resistant and a good thick one will feel nice underfoot, too.
ok just a bit of info ..hardwood needs constant looking after if you dont keep it treated it fades and looks ugly ..laminate comes in diffrent thicknesses the best is a make called pergo it has many protected layers on top of the photo film and is less lickely to scratch..do not put eithe of these into a kitchen as no wood floor is suitable for wet areas ,,and carpet better for stairs and bedrooms
laminate is a good choice as they also come in wood colors which you can put throw rugs over. Carpets really get quite nasty and hold so much dust and dead mites. Also if you ever need or want to re-sell the wood flooring would bring a better return on your investment.
go to hardwood floors.
i think laminates is a better option as compared to hard wood floor.. get laminates in wooden colour.
hard wood is beter
It depends on where you are.

In the USA, Costco is a good start.

Hardwood is more elegant, but laminated is OK as well, depending on the color your shall pick. The darker the more elegant. Oriental Weavers carpets is a very good pick. They can make tailored wall-to-wall carpets or center pieces.
go with laminate it does not show scratches as hard wood would and is cheaper for the same look as wood! Good Luck
haha Its amazing how great hardwood flooring looks...until u have to mop it. Over and over and over and over and over. Five years ago bought a home with majority of hardwood. 2 dogs and 1 kid later....hardwood sucks. Especially laminate. Its too high maintenance. Believe it or not I rather pretreat and spot clean a carpet than wash or wax (always having to use special cleaners and waxes or u ruin it even more.) a hardwood floor. I guess if its just you or you and a hubby go for it. Kids pets or any other high traffic you will hate it.
Quite frankly, regardless of what you go with in the bedrooms I really don't think you can go past wood floors. If they are done right straight up all you have to do is mop or sweep. We have had our dogs running on ours for years and not a scratch yet! I also have quite a few Grandkids and the floors are surviving quite well. And timber is great insulation as well. Lino scratches, tears, stains, burns and I wouldn't have it if you paid me! Good luck!
