Do you like wallpaper or paint? What pattern or color. Coordinate these colors and patterns with your walls as well as carpeting.
What are you most fond of? Antiques, family pictures, plants, fish. Do you want it sleek or homey/
You are the one who has to live with it and love it. Coordinate colors and fabric and let yourself go wild. Try different ideas, if you like it, fine. If not, just try something else.
I love what I've done with my home by shopping at garage sales, flea markets and the Salvation Army. Not only is it inexpensive but also fun. I'm never done...I see something I like and give serious thought as to where I could use it.

Find your favorite color (base on that) or take a theme and expand your ideas from there (like you love rock climbing and have a 20' wall in the family room.... you make a rock climbing wall as part of decor etc.).
House and deco is a very personal thing... remember it is all about you!
