I want to re-tile my shower. Once I remove the old tile, will I have to replace drywall?

Answers:
depends on how strong the adhesive on the old tile is. most likely, you will have the patch up some torn spots with putty to make it smooth before re-tiling. that's the best case scenario. good luck.

no. install cement backerboard over old drywall and tile it.
Yes. Make sure you get the sheetrock made for bathrooms. It's more water resistant. When I remolded my bathroom, we took out the walls and floor and gutted the whole room except for the ceiling since it was texturized. Then, once the walls were done, we put up a molding to cover the seem since we couldnt tape the finished ceiling. The hardest part was taking out the tub. Replacing sheetrock is fairly easy.
Not quite the same, but we just removed a mirrored wall and built in fabric headboard.

If the wall is in tact but damaged, all you have to do is this:

- Scrape the rough patches off.

- Prime the entire wall with an oil based primer, and let it dry for about 3 days. (Oil takes a while.)

- Sand the wall smooth.

- Retexture and prime another layer if you want, or just paint it if you're going to put tile back over it.

- If you retextured and primed, add the final layer of paint.

It's kind of time consuming, but really easy. You'll have it done in under a week.
