I will be installing a center island in my kitchen addition. What size wire willI run for the cook top stove?

Answers:
It depends upon the amperage requirement of the cooktop. If it is a gas cooktop, then it only needs power for an electronic igniter. A regular duplex receptacle with 12 AWG wire will work. I would tie this into your required 20 amp small appliance circuit that is GFCI protected.

If it is an electric cooktop, you need to check the cooktop for an amperage or wattage rating. Typically, cooktops are rated in kW or 1000 watts. To convert this to amps the formula is: watts divided by volts = amps.

Most cooktops I have wired require wiring for either 30 amps or a couple were 40 amps @ 240 volts. 30 amps requires 10 AWG wire and 40 amps requires 8 AWG wire.

Depending on the size of your island you probably need to install a couple of countertop receptacles. Get a copy of the 2005 NEC and read Article 210 to determine this.
