Ignorant man desperately needs help!?
And the second- we have a large 2-person jacuzzi tub. The tub is not sunken, but surrounding it is a raised area (raised to the level of the top of the tub), tiled in shiny indigo. It a place to sit while drying off, or sit and talk to someone in the tub...it makes the tub look sunken, since this raised area is about 3-4 feet out from the tub. Is there a special name for this raised and tiled area?

I don't think there is a special name for the area surrounding the fireplace though it could be wrong...a nice description might read: "Lovely stone tile work surround fireplace" or "Beautiful stonework edge extends from fireplace providing romantic seating." And "tiled decking surround large jacuzzi" or "tiled platform" a nice description can raise interest in a home...it helps buyers visualize the home when searching listings and visualize themselves in it.
No...I am housing hunting and certain phrases catch my eye...I'm a college student so I can't afford movies either, but right now it is actually cheaper to pay a mortgage on a small house in my county than to rent an apartment...crazy, but true!

The tub might be called a roman bath, but I'm not sure. The fireplace area, I don't know. Apron? Call a decorator and ask.
I dont think that there is a special name for the floor in front of the fireplace, I think.

The Jacuzzi - what about describing it as raised above ground with surrounding tiles (or whatever's there). Do you have to say it's not sunken? Prospective buyers will see it when they visit anyway. I think you should just say Jacuzzi to get them round to view.
that area around the fireplace is typically just called the base. as far as the jacuzzi area, I would just say that the tub is enveloped by a tiled staging area.

As for my medical question. I start nursing clinicals this fall, what should I expect from the physican's perspective?
The area surrounding the tub, would be called a tub deck or tub surround. Express the size of it how ever you feel. Expansive tub deck...ect.
As far as the stone on the floor at the fire place. there's really no special name for it that I know of. It's possible you still could refer to it as a lowered hearth area. If you're still living in your house, to make sure it doesnt seem out of place and that it's meant to be there, my suggestion, if you already don't do this, would be to let the fireplace tools sit on that part along with a little "wood" holder. That way, it'll appear as if it was put there for that particular purpose and to allow someone to still be able to sit on the raised hearth with their back towards the fire. You know how it is.
I've taken a basic course in Interior Design and I couldn't help but notice your question. I think you described pretty well the "areas" you wanted names for. I'm not sure I've encountered names for these spots while I was in school, though. Sorry. But I'll look it up and will definitely get back to you soonest. Hang on.

I would call that area around the hearth - an extended hearth (sounds fancy!)
Technically - the tub is a "deck-mounted tub". And 99% of decks are tiled, but most home buyers just want more descriptive words - so you could say "large, tiled, deck-mounted tub".
