How to create storage out of nothing?

I mean, I can't afford to buy an actual bookshelf already made or even an ikea one. Any idea how I could build a cheap unit to store my books in the living room?

Answers:
Storage is really about the use of space. If you think in term of "space," then you will get some inspiration soon.

Other answers:
Cinderblocks and wood.

Milk crates.

Or, just throw the books out. You're never going to read them anyway.

try a thrift store. Or if money is that much of an issue check the newspaper or yard sales for a great bargain.
u could try cardboard boxes, stacked so the open side is facing out. u can also try looking at old yardhouse/garage sales.. a LOT of times people put out pretty good, but maybe old, furniture because they just bought new ones! and they may sell it for really cheap just because it's huge and they don't want it anymore. my friend one time put out a really nice shelf cuz she was moving out, and couldn't lug it out. ooh try college kids' ads, like on Craigslist.... they always buy furniture for dorms or apartments, and sell fridges and furniture for cheap to get rid of it.

u can also try going to Michael's (craft store)..they have unfinished shelves and stuff. or kids sections will have smaller sized shelves maybe for cheaper?

good luck! :)
go to www.freecycle.org, find a local freecycle in your area. There are allways people giving away stuff for free.
Go to craigslist.org, and select your closest city.

There is a "Free" section, and they quiet often have bookshelves in them. If not, keep checking.

You can also find excellent deals even if you have to buy it.
use cinder blocks with plywood, you can make these really cheap. Also try using old milk crates.
Instead of setting the books up, stack them neatly, no shelves.
Go to a thrift store and you could add paint or remove paint to make it fit your taste.
In the paper there are giveaway sections try those.
Depending on the size of your books...how about some
different size baskets mounted on their sides on your walls. As long as the books aren't too heavy it would make for a great conversation piece in your living room.
