When are cans of stain too old to use. I have some that are 15 years old, and was wondering if it's too old?

They are too old. They will be lumpy and thick, and if there was a chance that they MIGHT work........you would never be able to find a color to match them if you ran out. Trust me on this, Ive owned and operated a cabinet shop for over 20 years..........just go buy some new stain and dont risk it. Minwax is the best.

If you can open them and stir up the solids on the bottom, they'll stain wood. Try it on some scrap. Just don't count on matching the same color or style if you want to get more.

open the can. if you can still stir it, try it on an old piece of wood first. but i think its too old.

Well it basically depends on whether the stain is actually usable. If you open up the can and the stain looks like stain, and has the same viscosity as a brand new can of stain, then it's still good. However, after 15 years, it probably has dried out and is no longer usable. Just open up the can and if it looks like stain, then go ahead, if it doesn't, you'll need to go and purchase some more.
Offcourse thet are too old normally it should be used for one use or twice to maximum 3 times Not more than that.
