I am installing a ceiling light. The wires coming out of the ceiling are yellow and white. Is yellow negativ
Answers:
Usually the colored wire is the Hot wire. The white USUALLy is the neutral. Should be copper ground wire too. If not, you may have what is known as a 3 way switch situation or there may be a ground on the union box the lite hangs on.
Get a little 3$ circuit tester and figure it out. They will have some advice on this on the package for the tester. Best to have a tester before doing any work, so yo know if the circuit is hot and or dangerous that way.
Always turn off elec. when workin on a cirucit unless you are testing it. When you know what's what then off the juice and do your thang. If this doesn't make sense to you. Get someone who knows what's the haps. Not worth fire, loss of life.

White is neutral and yellow is earth.
Most ceiling light have 2 wires. These are red or brown (live) and white or black or blue (neutral).
If you have a third wire, this would normally be green or yellow (earth).
From what you had described, yours should have 3 wires.
white is your com (ground) the other should be black (hot), the best thing to do is go to ace buy a $3.00 tester and test the yellow, if the tester lights up when you touch the yellow that's your hot wire.
