What should I do to my walls after stripping wallpaper, but before I paint?

Wash the walls down with TSP this can be purchased at most Walmart stores or Lowes etc, you want to make sure to remove any wallpaper paste residue that is left behind. Patch any areas in the wall that need patched, then prime and paint.

Usually when you strip paper, it leaves rough and sometimes uneven areas in the wall. It's necessary to fill any nail holes and smooth unven spaces with spackling. Let dry and sand smooth. Wipe with damp cloth to remove any loose particles. Next, you'll need to prime the wall to get it ready to accept the paint. I have found that instead of using the plain white primer which usually makes it necessary to apply 2 - 3 coats of wall paint to cover it, I have the primer tinted the same color as the paint which cuts down labor and cost considerably. first, make sure that you get off ALL the paste. Paste and latex paint react badly. If you aren't ABSOLUTELY sure that you got ALL the paste off, then prime it with an alkyd (oil based) primer, which will also seal up any places where the surface of the sheetrock happened to get torn. After it's good and dry, sand it lightly with a fine grit sandpaper. Then patch any imperfections in the wall, and prime the patches.
But, before you prime the wall, mask off the edges using an easy-removal masking tape. Place the tape at the exact line where the wall meets the base, not off my even a fraction. If it's a varnished base, and there's already a bit of paint on the base, scrape it off before you mask. When you're done painting, cut the tape with a utility knife.
And be sure to put down drop clothes, and put drop clothes in the area near where you're painting. If you step on a spill of paint, it will still be on the bottom of your foot when you leave the room.
