how do you paint old kitchen cabinets?

If the existing paint is in decent condition, lightly sand, prime and coat with an enamel. Use a very good brush, don't even think of a cheesy cheap one. If the paint is in bad condition, remove the doors and hardware, sand till very smooth, prime and paint...perhaps spray paint from a can will give you the look you want. Paint all the stringers and door surrounds to match. I suggest at least a semi gloss enamel so it is washable. Use polyurathane paint for a good finish and washable surface. Good luck.

Wash cabinets using TSP (be careful and follow directions, I splashed it accidentally and it etched my stove).
I removed hardware and doors. Painted the carcass and took the doors outdoors.
When you select your color, have it mixed using Kilz Colours. It's your primer AND finish coat in one. FANTASTIC coverage. I purchased this at Walmart, great price and was far easier than I thought to do. Good Luck.

I would go ahead and prime it before you paint. Remeber if you cabinets have deep cracks they are going to show through the paint!
Make sure the surface is clean and in good condition.
Prime with "Gripper." It is a primer that sticks to ANYTHING! No sanding needed! Yaaay! Then paint with whatever color you want!
