just got new furniture...have pets and kids..is there any covers that can protect against spills,etc?

An easy convenient way is to put a bed sheeet or blanket on so they can be removed and washed. Also when people come over you can remove them quickly.

With pets and kids I would purchase some heavy duty visqueen or else a large tarp!! Just kidding.
Have you ever heard of no food, drink, or shoes in the living room? Make the kids sit at the kitchen or dining area table. They shouldn't be allowed in the living room with food or drink anyway.
Start teaching them respect for belongings now and not try when it is too late.
