Choosing appliances?
Answers:
Had black, looked great, but showed all the dust.
Had white, was easier to keep clean.
And am now getting black yet again. Only because the actual oven I want doesn't come in stainless electric, only gas.

I think it depends on the color and style of your kitchen. I just re-did my whole kitchen and I chose white appliances. But my cabinets are white, my floors are medium gray and I didn't want to be hassled with wiping fingerprints off of the stainless.

I prefer the black appliances because I have a mechanic husband with dirty hands and a 4 year old with grubby paws! White shows everything!
I used to have white and liked them alot. Now I have black and i don't like them. Thye show dust and look smeary a lot. The next time I need appliances I will try stainless, I think. Also, you want to consider the color for the overall look in the kitchen. Black will definitely darken it, but would look good with white cabinets, but not as good with wood. White will brighten anything and stainless will match anything. Just be sure that everything else in your kitchen is stainless too (sink, knobs, etc. )
Something to think about. How long do you keep your appliances? If later you need to replace one and not the others you may not be able to find a black or stainless steel. I think they are probably just the popular colors for now, just like years ago avocado, gold, rust or beige were popular for awhile and then when they were no longer available those colors dated the house or remodeling job. I has always chosen white, the color does not go out of style and if later you want to paint your kitchen the color you like may not go with the colored appliances.
Depends on your theme in the kitchen. If country look, white. If modern, stainless steel. Personally, I prefer stainless steel.
