I live in a 1987 manufactured home, what paint do I use on pre-wallpapered sheetrock?
Answers:
First use an oil-based primer(Kilz)then paint with any paint normally used for sheetrock.
Other answers:
Kilz is an effective primer, but there is also another one on the market, comparable to Kilz, and the odor isn't as awful--the folks out at your home improvement store will be able to tell you the name of it, I'm sorry but the name of it escapes me...be sure to keep the area you are working in well-ventilated, take the extra time to properly tape off areas, etc...We bought a lot of our roller brushes and paint brushes, etc. from Big Lots and they worked fine. (The brushes and trays were kind of steep at the Big Name Home Improvement store--we put the extra saved bucks into buying a better quality paint after priming.)

We moved into a manufactured home of about the same age (ours is a 98) and decided to have the place re-drywalled. It looks great now. I had done some research prior to this decision that led me to believe that sometimes the paint will not stick to the vinyl covered sheetrock that was already there without having to use several chemicals to degrease and prime the walls. I didn't want to deal with the toxic fumes this would produce. I am very happy with the re-drywalling. It also gave us a chance to modify a few areas, since we were drywalling anyway. We took out partial wall that was just in the way and re-did some doors. We also mananged to re-do the bathroom so that we could fit a regualr size tub into it. Just moved a closet wall.
